How to Use Cooking Timers
Learn how per-step timers work inside Cooking Mode so nothing overcooks.
Where timers come from
Inside Cooking Mode, any step that includes a cooking or resting time will show a built-in timer for that step. You don't need a separate kitchen timer or app.
Starting a timer
- Enter Cooking Mode for your recipe.
- Move to the step that has a time attached to it.
- Tap the timer shown on that step to start the countdown.
- Continue reading the step instructions while the timer runs in the background.
Managing a running timer
- You can pause or restart a timer if you get interrupted.
- If a step has more than one timed action, each one will have its own timer so you can track them separately.
- The timer keeps counting even if you move to look at another step, so you won't lose track of it.
When a timer finishes
The app will alert you when time is up. This is your cue to check the dish, stir, flip, or move on to the next step as the recipe describes.
Troubleshooting
- If a timer does not appear on a step, that step likely doesn't have a timed action in the recipe.
- If you don't hear the alert, check that your device's volume is turned up and that the browser tab is still open.
- If the countdown seems to have paused unexpectedly, tap the timer again to resume it.
Tips
- Start the timer as soon as you begin the action described in the step, not after you finish reading it, so the timing stays accurate.
- Keep Cooking Mode open in the foreground so timers and alerts work reliably.
